Soror Aliene Carrington Ewell was born in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from Freedmen's Hospital School of Nursing, Washington, DC, in 1922. She pursued her education at the District of Columbia Teacher's College where she received a baccalaureate degree. She also studied at The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, and Columbia University, New York City.

Soror Ewell worked as a staff nurse for the Instructive Visiting Nurses Society and the District of Columbia Public Health Department. In 1957, she became the Executive Director of the Ionia R. Whipper Home, Inc., Washington, DC, where she worked until her retirement in 1967. Soror Ewell conceived the idea of a Nursing Sorority and, along with eleven other dedicated visionaries, founded Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated. Our Founder, Soror Aliene C.
