Susan Elizabeth Freeman

Soror Susan Elizabeth Freeman was born in Stratford, Connecticut. She graduated from Freedmen's Hospital School of Nursing, Washington, DC, in 1926. She engaged in postgraduate studies at Columbia University, New York City, Howard University and The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.

She worked at Freedmen's Hospital in a variety of positions and served in the Army Nurse Corps. While in the Army Nurse Corps, Soror Freeman held the position of Chief Nurse at Fort Huachuca, Arizona and the 25th Station Hospital, Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. She was the first chief nurse of the first unit of Black nurses to serve overseas and the first Black nurse promoted to the rank of Captain.

Soror Freeman received many awards including a citation as Knight Official of the Order of African Redemption from the Liberian government. In 1945, she received the Mary Mahoney Award from the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. She died on September 12, 1979.
