African American infants are two to three times more likely to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or crib death than white infants. SIDS is the sudden and unexpected death of a baby between one month and one year of age whose death remains unexplained after a complete autopsy, investigation of the circumstances of death and review of the infant's medical history.
Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc has entered into a partnership with the Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs (ASIP) to officially support the Back to Sleep campaign and promote the campaign's message in the African American communities. Each chapter implements the Back to Sleep educational project in their community. Educational materials for this project are supplied by ASIP. For more information on this important initiative visit the following links: Back to Sleep Campaign, SIDS Rates by State, SIDS Network, National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Resource Center, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Alliance.
African American women have the highest mortality rate for breast cancer, as the illness is not diagnosed until the latter stages. Stay Beautiful Stay Alive is a program conducted in collaboration with the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NBLIC). The importance of and the method of conducting monthly breast self examination is taught to women who frequent beauty salons. Educational materials for this program are provided by NBLIC.
Hypertension is a precursor to cardiovascular illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure and African Americans have the highest morbidity and mortality rates in all areas. Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. has partnered with the American Heart Association and the National Institute on Health to offer hypertension-screening programs. These programs are developed and conducted to identify potential and actual health problems in targeted populations. An appropriate list of referrals for medical supervision of problems identified is provided.
In collaboration with the American Diabetes Association and the National Institute on Health, Chi Eta Phi Sorority provides public education and screening programs for those in high-risk groups. The American Diabetes Association provides educational materials for this program.
The Chi Teen program was established in 1993 to provide health education sessions for middle school to high school students thus promoting healthy lifestyles. The Future Nurses Club was organized to encourage recruitment into the nursing profession. Programs are provided to promote interest of potential students in nursing careers. Financial and tutorial services are provided in addition to members serving as mentors, providing health care experiences and offering peer forums.
Chi Care Calls provides various services to senior citizens, such as travel assistance, health education, assistance in accessing the health care system and a system of checking on the well being of the elderly who live alone.
Leadership development seminars are designed to assist the membership in the development of effective leadership skills.
One of the Sorority's major programs is the provision of financial assistance
to nursing students who meet established criteria. Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.
awards $50,000.00 annually in scholarships because of its commitment to providing
access to quality educational training and financial assistance to nursing
students. Scholarship awards occur on the National,
Regional and Local Levels. The national scholarships include the Aliene
Carrington Ewell Scholarship and the Mabel
